A prismatic cell is a cell whose chemistry is enclosed in a rigid casing. Its rectangular shape allows efficiently stacking multiple units in a battery module. There are two types of prismatic cells: the electrode sheets inside the casing (anode, separator, cathode) are either stacked or rolled and flattened.

Stacked prismatic cells can release more energy at once, offering better performance, whereas flattened prismatic cells contain more energy, offering more durability.

Cylindrical cells have more power than prismatic cells but they may store less energy. While cylindrical cells might be taken over by prismatic cells, they are still very popular among many applications and high performance EVs.

Battery Management System

The battery management system (BMS) is the “brain” of a battery pack. The BMS is a set of electronics that monitors and manages all of the battery’s performance. It also keeps the battery from operating outside of its safety margins, increasing its longevity and protecting the users.
